§ Sir Raymond GowerTo ask the Secretary of State for Wales if he has now received from the National Museum of Wales its considered comments on the P-E Inbucon report; and if he will make a statement.
§ Mr. Peter WalkerI received the museum's comments on 4 March. The museum's council has responded 197W constructively and positively to the recommendations in the report. It has broadly accepted the recommendations, though with certain reservations. In particular, the council expresses concern that there should be the shortest possible delay in proceeding with the Cathays Park building project. My response makes clear that I have no intention of delaying matters longer than is necessary. I am placing a copy of the president's letter in the Library of the House, together with a copy of my reply. Officials will now engage in detailed discussion with the museum and draw up an action plan for the implementation of the recommendations. In that context we shall consider any case advanced by the museum for additional resources.
There is still a long way to go, but the council's response gives me confidence that the problems of the museum will be tackled expeditiously and effectively. Our common purpose is that the museum should be enabled to realise its full potential and take its proper place in the cultural life of the Principality.
