To ask the Secretary of State for Social Services what public health policy initiatives he proposes to take in the light of the report on air conditioning and ventilation analysis by ACVA Inc., a copy of which has been sent to him; and if he will make a statement.

As I and my noble Friend have explained when writing to my hon. Friend, the Government are actively reviewing current knowledge and research (including a major United Kingdom study, now published, which has been carried out by a private company). The report to which my hon. Friend refers is a useful addition to the literature.

There is increasing awareness of the opportunities offered by, and the problems associated with, air conditioning and ventilation. It would be premature to take any policy initiatives before these reviews have been completed.
