§ Mr. KaufmanTo ask the Prime Minister if she will cause an inquiry to be held into the handling of correspondence by the office of the Secretary of State for Social Services in view of its loss of correspondence from the right hon. Member for Manchester, Gorton, forwarded by the Secretary of State for the Home Department in October 1987, and its failure to notify the Department of Employment that on 21 January it was forwarding to it correspondence from the right hon. Member for Manchester, Gorton.
§ The Prime MinisterI understand that extensive inquiries have already been carried out by the Department of Health and Social Security and I see no need for a further inquiry. My right hon. Friend the Secretary of State for Social Services has already undertaken (on 14 March at column470 and on 17 March at column 664) to look into the matter raised in the October 1987 letter on receipt of a copy of the correspondence. A further copy of the 21 January 1988 letter and the relevant correspondence is being sent to the Department of Employment.
