HC Deb 23 March 1988 vol 130 cc139-40W
20. Mr. Irvine

To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland what is the number of operations cancelled in Scottish hospitals since the industrial action by the trades unions began; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Michael Forsyth

Health boards report that, as at 18 March, 2,609 operations had not taken place because of industrial action. In addition, almost 30,000 man-days have been lost, over 40,000 disposable sheets have been used and nearly 80,000 meals have been affected. On 24 February there was inadequate emergency cover for one or more services in more than 20 hospitals, and there have been similar instances on other days. I deplore the adverse effects upon patients and waiting lists.
