HC Deb 23 March 1988 vol 130 c146W
Rev. Martin Smyth

To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland what information he has as to the ethnic composition of staff in his Department; what is the total number of staff; and how many are(a) Welsh, (b) Scottish, (c) English and (d) members of ethnic minorities.

Mr. Rifkind

The total number of staff in the Scottish Office, excluding the Scottish Prison Service, was 6,525 on 1 March 1988. It is not known how many staff are Welsh, Scottish or English, but in a recent voluntary survey of the ethnic origins of staff, which achieved a response rate of 88 per cent., 99.6 per cent. of respondents classified themselves as "White", 0.3 per cent. as "Asian" and 0.1 per cent. as "Black".
