§ Sir Trevor SkeetTo ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether the duty on petrol will require to be harmonised by 1992.
§ Mr. Lilley[holding answer 21 March 1988]: The Commission has proposed harmonisation of the excise duty on petrol by 1992. The proposal would cause difficulties for a number of member states, including the United Kingdom, and has important implications for a wide range of Community and national policies including transport, energy and environment. As decisions on the proposals require unanimity, the United Kingdom's position is fully safeguarded.
