84. Mr. Nicholas Brown

To ask the Secretary of State for Defence how many frigates over the age of 20 years he expects to be in service with the Royal Navy in 1990.

Mr. Ian Stewart

Of the frigates currently in the fleet, 16 would be over the age of 20 years on 1 January 1990. It is not possible to forecast exactly how many of the 16 will be in service in 1990, as plans for the withdrawal of ships from the active fleet are kept under review. However, on current plans four are due to be withdrawn before 1990.

41. Mr. Douglas

To ask the Secretary of State for Defence if he will make a statement on the up-to-date position with regard to frigate orders which his Department expects to place in 1988.

Mr. Sainsbury

I have nothing to add to the answer I gave on 26 January 1988 at columns181–82.

82. Mr. Galbraith

To ask the Secretary of State for Defence how many type-23 frigates he expects to order in the next five years.

Mr. Sainsbury

Decisions have yet to be taken on the size and timing of future orders.
