HC Deb 21 March 1988 vol 130 c16W
Mr. Foulkes

To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland how many cases were referred to the Lay Observer in 1987; in how many of these she found some justifiable complaint against the Law Society in its dealing with complaints; and what were the comparable figures in 1986.

Lord James Douglas-Hamilton

The Lay Observer for Scotland handled 248 cases in 1987 and in 62 of these she criticised aspects of the handling of the complaint by the Law Society of Scotland. The comparable figures in 1986 were 232 and 43 respectively.
