HC Deb 17 March 1988 vol 129 c624W
Mr. Sims

To ask the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster what action he proposes to take following the introduction on 1 January by the Government of Greece of a value added tax structure which increases rather than diminishes discrimination in favour of locally produced spirits and against imported products.

Mr. Alan Clark

The discriminatory VAT rates operating in Greece are already under challenge in the European Court of Justice: the EC Commission has brought proceedings under article 169 of the treaty. The Commission is in no doubt that the United Kingdom attacahes the greatest importance to this case.
