HC Deb 17 March 1988 vol 129 cc639-40W
Mr. Nicholas Bennett

To ask the Secretary of State for Energy what discussions have taken place between his Department, British Coal, the National Union of Mineworkers and the National Association of Colliery Overmen, Deputies and Shotfirers concerning the proposed Margam pit; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Michael Spicer

This matter is for discussion between the management and unions. British Coal has kept me informed of developments. It also consulted my right hon. Friend's predecessor when he was Secretary of State about the project. British Coal reached the view that because of the high capital cost the project could be viable only if flexible working was introduced. My right hon. Friend's predecessor agreed with this assessment. My right hon. Friend and I fully support his view and hope that working arrangements can be agreed and the project can proceed as planned.
