HC Deb 17 March 1988 vol 129 c655W
29. Dr. Michael Clark

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he will call for a report from the Commissioner of Police of the Metropolis on the priority accorded by the Commissioner to the detection or prevention of litter offences.

Mr. Douglas Hogg

The Government are concerned about the effect of litter on the environment. We do not regard this problem as one to which the primary response should be enforcement of the law by the police. Nevertheless, I understand from the Commissioner that his officers have been made aware of the provisions of the Litter Act and that the detection and prevention of litter offences are accorded as much priority as is compatible with other demands placed upon the Metropolitan police.
