§ Mr. RentonIn broad terms, the basic principles of the Government's immigration policy are to allow genuine visitors and students to come here; to give effect to the free movement provisions of European Community law; subject to that, to restrict severely the numbers coming to live permanently in this country or for employment, but to continue to admit the spouses and minor dependent children of those already settled here, provided they satisfy the requirements of the immigration rules. These principles are to be pursued firmly but fairly with the efficient use of resources.
