HC Deb 17 March 1988 vol 129 c658W
41. Mr. Speller

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many persons Exeter prison is designed to accommodate; how many were held there on the first days of January and February; how many of them were on remand awaiting trial and sentence; and if he will make a statement on the future of Exeter prison.

Mr. Douglas Hogg

The certified normal accommodation of Exeter prison, including the remand centre, is 307. On 1 January the prison held 461 prisoners of whom 266 were sentenced, 62 were convicted but unsentenced and 133 were unconvicted. On 1 February the figures were 495, 305, 27 and 163 respectively. Refurbishment work currently in progress on the prison's D wing is due to be completed at the end of this year. That will enable 40 places to be brought back into use.
