To ask the Secretary of State for Transport what representations he has received regarding the installation of emergency telephones on the Al2 bypass at Chelmsford; what proposals there are to install such telephones; and if he will make a statement.

Representations have been received from two local residents. The A12 Chelmsford bypass is one of a number of lengths of trunk road identified by the Department as meriting installation of emergency telephones when funds can be made available.

I hope to announce shortly a list of sites at which installation is proposed in 1988–89 and 1989–90.
