HC Deb 16 March 1988 vol 129 c615W
Mr. McCrindle

To ask the Secretary of State for Social Services if he will list those district health authorities in England and Wales which do not have a day centre for mentally ill people.

Mrs. Currie

[holding answer 10 March 1988]: Day centres for mentally ill people are usually provided by local authorities. In England only Trafford, Suffolk, Hounslow, Gloucestershire and City of London did not report having day centre places for mentally ill people in 1986. Additionally the following district health authorities in England did not report attendances at mental illness day hospitals in 1986:

  • Hartlepool
  • Darlington
  • Scarborough
  • North Lincolnshire
  • West Norfolk and Wisbech
  • Winchester
  • Torbay
  • Herefordshire
  • Halton
  • Rochdale
  • North Tyneside
  • Northallerton
  • Dewsbury
  • Rugby
  • East Birmingham

However, all except the last five in the list reported attendances at mental illness day facilities at the main hospital in 1986.

Information for Wales is the responsibility of my right hon. Friend the Secretary of State for Wales.
