To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Science if he will publish the Government's funding plans for the Workers' Education Association for 1988–89, 1989–90 and 1990–91; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Pike

To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Science what representations he has received concerning the future funding of the Workers' Education Association; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Dunn

We are not yet in a position to announce future grants to the Workers' Educational Association districts. These will be determined in the light of the resources available and the Government's priorities.

In the current Session, three letters about the association have been received from hon. Members. Additionally, my noble Friend the Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State, received a request for a meeting from the association's national executive to discuss the work of the WEA and the funding arrangements.

Officials from the Department are currently discussing the future of the association with its representatives.
