To ask the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster what information he has as to the numbers of companies registering at Companies House; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Maude

A total of 121,125 new companies were registered in England and Wales in 1987, and 5,926 in Scotland. At the end of January 1988 the total number of live companies, including those registered in Scotland, was 925,321
