HC Deb 15 March 1988 vol 129 c498W
Mr. Boyes

To ask the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster what percentage of the United Kingdom automotive industry was Japanese-owned; and what market share this represents, for each year from 1979.

Mr. Atkins

Nissan Motor Manufacturing (UK) Ltd. is the sole wholly-owned Japanese vehicle manufacturer in the United Kingdom. Production of cars began at Sunderland in 1986 and so far makes up only a small, though increasing, proportion of total sales by Nissan here. Nissan's overall share of the United Kingdom market since 1979—supplied solely by imports from Japan until 1985, and by a mixture of imports and United Kingdom-produced vehicles since then — has been as follows:

per cent.
1979 5.9
1980 6.07
1981 5.94
1982 5.99
1983 5.84
1984 6.08
1985 5.76
1986 5.84
1987 5.67
