HC Deb 14 March 1988 vol 129 c439W
Mr. Tony Banks

To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland if he will detail the type of damage caused to crops and grassland by the feeding habits of white-fronted geese on Islay.

Mr. Michael Forsyth

Typical damage to root crops is a widespread breaking in to the roots which leads to deterioration and rotting. Livestock feed is lost and damaged turnips are unmarketable for human consumption.

Continual grazing pressure on improved grassland causes a loss of valuable winter and spring grazing for livestock.
