To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what is his latest estimate of the chemical weapons capacity of the United States.

As my hon. Friend the Minister of State for the Armed Forces told the House on 3 December 1987, it would be inappropriate to comment in detail on the defence capabilities of an ally. As is well known, the United States has a limited and aging retaliatory chemical weapons capability which it is in the process of modernising.
