HC Deb 14 March 1988 vol 129 c477W
28. Mrs. Ray Mitchie

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport what new road safety initiatives his Department plans for the next year.

Mr. Peter Bottomley

We intend to announce later this year the outcome of the consultations that we have had following publication last year of the report "Road safety — the next steps", and our plans for implementing its recommendations so as to accelerate the reduction in road accident casualties.

Major initiatives so far have been the publication in February of our proposals for improving the training and testing of motor cyclists, and the review of motorway safety which we announced at Christmas—the results of which we expect to publish in the early spring. Tackling drinking and driving remains a major priority, as does the safety of all vulnerable road users, particularly children and pedestrians of all ages.
