HC Deb 14 March 1988 vol 129 c437W
Mr. McTaggart

To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland if he will make a statement about the transfer of prisoners back to Barlinnie from Low Moss remand centre, and what further steps he will take to relieve overcrowding in Scottish prisons.

Lord James Douglas-Hamilton

On 26 January 1988 a number of inmates at Low Moss began to destroy furniture and fittings. When the incident was under control 24 inmates from one dormitory were transferred to HM prison Barlinnie. There was significant damage to property. No injuries were sustained.

The Scottish Home and Health Department is currently reviewing the revised use of capacity in its establishments. A further hall will become available at HM prison Shotts in the near future.
