HC Deb 14 March 1988 vol 129 cc428-9W
Sir Russell Johnson

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs if any United Kingdom aid-supported projects in geographical areas subject to attack or disruption by the Mozambique National Resistance have been disrupted by the Mozambique National Resistance; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Chris Patten

We have had reports of two incidents at or near the sites where teams from the National Railways of Zimbabwe are reconstructing the Limpopo railway from Chicualacuala. In addition work has been disrupted from time to time on the Beira and Nacala railway projects. All aid-financed activities, particularly emergency relief, suffer in varying degrees from the disruption of internal transport caused by the security situation.

Sir Russell Johnson

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs if he will state the level of United Kingdom aid to Mozambique, giving details of(a) the nature of each project supported, (b) the level of support given to each project and (c) the location within Mozambique of each project.

Mr. Chris Patten

Commitments of United Kingdom aid to Mozambique amounted to £35 million in 1987, of which £15 million was for balance of payments support and £15 million for emergency relief. We are also contributing to transport projects in Mozambique sponsored by the Southern African development co-ordination conference. Details of current capital projects are as follows:
