Mr. John Marshall

To ask the Secretary of State for Employment if he will make a statement about the changes in the level of unemployment in the London borough of Barnet over the last two years.

Mr. Lee

The number of unemployed claimants in the Barnet local authority area at the latest date available and in the previous two years was as follows:

January 1986 11,256
January 1987 10,821
January 1988 8,685

The comparison is affected by the changes in the compilation of the unemployment statistics in March 1986.

Mr. Coombs

To ask the Secretary of State for Employment what was the total number of people benefiting from special employment and training measures at the latest available date in the Swindon area; and if he will list the measures and the numbers involved in each case.

The number of people participating in special employment and training measures funded by my Department including Manpower Services Commission programmes and schemes in the Swindon area on 31 January 1988 was as follows:
