HC Deb 14 March 1988 vol 129 cc439-40W
Ms. Quin

To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland what is the number of staff employed by the Forestry Commission in the Kielder forest district in 1985 to 1987 in (a) supervisory and administrative grades and (b) industrial grades; and in each category, how many staff are employed in (i) planting and maintenance, (ii) harvesting, (iii) nursery work, (iv) research, survey and environmental work and (v) forest work.

Mr. Gummer

I have been asked to reply.

The information, which is based on average figures, is as follows:

Year Supervisory and administrative grades Industrial grades
1985 34 149
1986 33 144
1987 33 136

The above figures do not include directly employed private contractors; the number of such contractors at 31 March 1987 was 22.

Most staff are employed on a range of duties in the course of a year. It is not practicable, therefore, to break down the total numbers of staff employed into the listed areas of work.

Ms. Quin

To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland what was the total area of Forestry Commission land in Kielder Forest district in each of the years 1985 to 1987; and what was the area of(a) land under trees, (b) unplanted land, (c) land planted and(d) land harvested, in each of those years.
