HC Deb 14 March 1988 vol 129 cc419-20W
Mr. Simon Hughes

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department what is the average length of time taken for his Department to deal with cases of application for asylum (a) at ports of entry and (b) made by people who already have leave to enter.

Mr. Renton

For applications decided in 1987 it is estimated that the average length of time between the receipt of the application and the decision was 10 months for those applying at ports of entry and 16 months for those already in the United Kingdom.
