Mr. Neale

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport if he will report on progress on the planning, design and construction of the various improvement schemes to the A30 from Launceston to Mitchell.

We are making good progress on the six schemes in the national programme between Launceston and Mitchell. Together they will provide over 27 miles of dual carriageway at an estimated cost of some £35 million. The detailed position on each is:

Launceston to Plusha The statutory procedures were completed in February. Construction is expected to start later this year.

Plusha to Bolventor Revised proposals were published in October 1987. A public inquiry is to be held in April. The programmed start of contruction is in the period April 1989 to March 1991.

Shallowater Hill improvement Added to the national programme in April 1987 with a programmed start of construction in the period April 1991 onwards. Preliminary studies and investigations are now in hand.

Bodmin to Indian Queens Added to the national programme in April 1987 with a programmed start of construction in the period April 1991 onwards. A design agent is to be appointed shortly.

Indian Queens/Fraddon/St. Columb road bypasses Public consultation of further options was held in January/ February. Comments received are now being studied. A preferred route is expected to be announced later this year. The programmed start of construction is in the period April 1991 onwards.

Penhale to Carland Cross improvement A public inquiry was held in February and the inspector's report is awaited. The scheme, which would bypass Summercourt and Mitchell, is programmed to start construction in the period April 1989 to March 1991.

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport if he will report on progress on the planning, design and construction of the various improvement schemes of the A30 from Mitchell to Long Rock, Penzance.

We are making good progress on the two schemes in the national programme between Mitchell (Carland Cross) and Long Rock.

The detailed position is:

Zelah bypass Revised proposals were published in November 1987. An announcement about a public inquiry is to be made shortly. The programmed start of construction is in the period April 1989 to March 1991.

Black water bypass Construction is expected to be completed this summer. Work has also started on the final phase of the safety improvements on the A30 at Crowlas.

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport if he will report on progress on the planning and design of the A30 improvement from Okehampton to Launceston; and what is the intended year for the start of its construction.

Survey and detailed design work on this £21.8 million scheme is now nearly completed. Proposals are expected to be published in draft orders towards the end of the year. The planned start of construction is in the period April 1991 onwards. Given satisfactory progress with the statutory and administrative procedures we hope to start work early in that period.
