HC Deb 11 March 1988 vol 129 cc356-7W
Mr. Tony Banks

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many traffic wardens have been deployed in the London borough of Newham on average in each day during the most recent period for which figures are available.

Mr. Douglas Hogg

I understand from the Commissioner of Police of the Metropolis that 14 traffic wardens are deployed in the London borough of Newham, working in two shifts of seven. Sickness and other abstractions may reduce the numbers slightly on particular days.

Mr. Tony Banks

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many traffic wardens have been deployed in London in each of the past five years.

Mr. Douglas Hogg

The number of traffic wardens varies throughout the year but I understand from the Metropolitan police and the City of London police that the strength of the traffic warden service at the end of each of the past five years was as follows:

31 December Metropolitan police district City
1983 1,789 57
1984 1,829 79
1985 1,698 79
1986 1,668 65
1987 1,527 71

Mr. Tony Banks

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department what representations he has received concerning the transfer of London traffic wardens from his Department to local authorities.

Mr. Douglas Hogg

Traffic wardens in London are employed by the Metropolitan police and by the corporation of the City of London. We have received representations from the community and police consultative groups for Hillingdon and for Paddington and Marylebone that Metropolitan police wardens should he transferred to local authority control. The Association of London Authorities and the London Boroughs Association have also presented proposals under which local authorities would employ parking control officers to perform the functions currently undertaken by Metropolitan police traffic wardens. These proposals are being considered by a working party on which the Home Office, Department of Transport, the police and the local authority associations are represented.
