§ Sir Barney HayhoeTo ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer what is his latest estimated outturn for expenditure on the National Health Service in 1987–88; what increase is planned for 1988–89; and what change this represents over that indicated in the Autumn Statement 1987 and the public expenditure White Paper (Cm. 288–1).
§ Mr. LawsonI holding answer 4 March 1988]: The estimated outturn for expenditure on the NHS in the United Kingdom in 1987–88 contained in the public expenditure White Paper was £20,569 million. However, this did not include the additional £102 million in health authorities' cash limits announced on 16 December. Expenditure in 1988–89 is planned to rise to £21,818 million, an increase of £1,147 million or 5.5 per cent. over 1987–88 when the additional £102 million for this financial year is taken into account. Revised estimates of the 1987–88 outturn for voted expenditure will be published in the main Estimates on Budget day.
