§ Mr. AlexanderTo ask the Secretary of State for Social Services what were the costs to public funds of the administration of Trent regional health authority in each year since 1982.
§ Mr. NewtonFollowing is the information derived from the annual accounts of the health authorities comprising the Trent region.
It would be misleading to interpret a regional health authority's data in isolation from that of the districts it manages. Regions are managed in an integrated way and, therefore, to provide a more accurate picture, regional health authority and district health authority figures should be combined.

1. Expenditure on headquarters administration includes all current expenditure on the pay and pay related costs of staff of all disciplines (including general managers) employed at headquarters levels and their office costs and overheads. It excludes the cost of clerical and secretarial support staff employed in departments at hospital and unit levels: such costs are regarded as operational.
2. Prior to 1 April 1985 many of the district health authorities had an associated family practitioner committee (FPC) and those authorities' expenditure for the years before that date includes elements relating to FPCs' administrative expenses which are not separately identifiable.
