HC Deb 09 March 1988 vol 129 c241W
Mr. Conway

To ask the Secretary of State for Social Services (1) how many administrators were employed in the National Health Service at district health authority level in 1978–79 and 1986–87;

(2) how many administrators were employed in the National Health Service at regional health authority level in 1978–79 and 1986–87.

Mr. Newton

It is not possible readily to distinguish, from staff engaged on administrative and clerical work in the National Health Service, those solely engaged as administrators. The table provides figures for administrative and clerical staff in the respective years:

Administrative and Clerical Staff in Post at Regional Health Authority Level and at District Health Authority Level in England at 30 September.
Whole-time equivalents1
Regional Health Authority Level District Health Authority Level
1978 7,500 84,900
1986 7,800 95,500

Source: DHSS Annual Census of NHS Non-Medical Manpower

1 Figures are rounded to the nearest one hundred (100) whole-time equivalents.

2 1978 figures include staff at area health authority level whose functions were devolved to district health authorities as a result of the 1982 reorganisation.
