To ask the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster what information he has on the trend for information technology graduates and those with science degrees to take employment in the City rather than in manufacturing industry; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Butcher

My Department regularly receives information on the first employment destinations of UK university graduates from the Department of Education and Science. Whilst many jobs in manufacturing are open to graduates of any discipline, others require specific expertise, graduates in subjects which are less strongly attracted to careers where a general level of academic attainment is required, including some in the financial and commercial sectors. It should be noted that only a small proportion of such jobs are in the City.

The tables illustrate the recent trends in the first employment of engineering and science university graduates:
