To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland what action is being taken to ensure that there are adequate numbers of teachers in Scotland training for languages other than French.

Consultations about the annual intake of student teachers to the colleges of education provide a mechanism for alerting the Government to areas of actual or potential need. The most recent consultations indicate that the supply of modern languages teachers is adequate to meet the needs of education authorities.
