HC Deb 08 March 1988 vol 129 cc116-7W
Mr. Cran

To ask the Secretary of State for Employment how many members of staff within his Department are located within each region outside London; what percentage this constitutes of staff within his Department; and what were the comparable figures, in absolute and percentage terms in 1979.

Mr. Lee

It is estimated that the following numbers and percentages of staff were employed within the regions of the Department of Employment group at 1 January 1988. Comparable data for 1979 and a disaggregation of central London staff from those in the south-east as a whole are not available without disproportionate cost.

Department of Employment group staff in post at 1 January 1988
Number Percentage of all staff
Scotland 6,120 10.2
North-West 8,641 14.4
Northern 4,080 6.8
Yorkshire and Humberside 7,740 12.9
Wales 3,420 5.7
Midlands 8,641 14.4

Number Percentage of all staff
South-West 4,020 6.7
London and South-East 17,341 28.9
All 60,003

Note:

The Department of Employment (DE) group comprises the Department itself (including the employment service), the Manpower Services Commission (MSC), the Health and Safety Executive and Commission (HSE and HSC) and the Advisory, Conciliation and Arbitration Service (ACAS). There are some minor variations in regional boundaries between different parts of the group.
