§ Lord SkelmersdaleInformation on the number of nurses holding specific qualifications and the numbers who leave the National Health Service is not collected centrally. However, the total number of nursing staff employed in paediatric intensive care units in England at 30th September 1986 was 360 in whole-time equivalent terms—an increase of 127 per cent. since September 1981. Similar information for September 1987 is not yet available.
In 1987, 18 nurses completed paediatric intensive care nurse training at Great Ormond Street Hospital and 15 are currently in training. A further intake of 15 is expected in July 1988. It is expected that the course will be introduced at the Birmingham Children's Hospital later this year.
