§ Mr. SalmondTo ask the Secretary of State for the Environment what estimate he has of how much of the material for which Nirex is currently seeking a repository(a) has originated or (b) will originate (i) in the United Kingdom, (ii) in Scotland and (iii) outside the United Kingdom.
§ Mr. Moynihan[holding answer 25 February 1988]: UK Nirex Ltd is responsible for identifying a suitable location for a deep underground repository for the disposal of low-level (LLW) and intermediate-level (ILW) radioactive wastes. I understand from UK Nirex that there are at present 41,800 cu m of ILW stored in the United Kingdom pending disposal of Nirex's repository. Ten per cent. of this ILW originated in Scotland and less than 3 per cent. from outside the United Kingdom. Some of the latter is returnable. Nirex expect to dispose of about 1 million cu m of LLW and about 0.3 million cu m of ILW in their repository by 2030. Eleven per cent. of the LLW and 10 per cent. of the ILW is expected to come from Scotland, and 1.4 per cent. of the ILW from outside the United Kingdom.
