§ Mr. Nicholls[holding answer 22 February 1988]: At 29 January 1988, the latest date for which figures are available, some 26,249 formerly unemployed people were participating in the new job training scheme. The area breakdown is set out in the table.
As for leavers from the scheme, a return from managing agents seeking information on the reasons for leaving was first requested in October 1987. Data from this return is known to be incomplete so far and will not be comparable between areas and managing agents in all places. The data does not provide reliable information about job entry rates or other trainee destinations. This information will be gathered by an independent follow-up survey of all trainees which has now started. Early results are expected in the spring. Managing agents' returns will be considered in the light of that information.
