Mr. Tony Banks

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs if he will make a statement on current relations between Her Majesty's Government and Panama.

Mr. Eggar

We maintain normal diplomatic relations with Panama. Together with our EC partners we have expressed deep concern about recent developments in Panama and have appealed to the present rulers of Panama to open the way for internal peace and democracy.

Mr. Tony Banks

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what advice is being given to British citizens in Panama in the light of recent events in that country.

Mr. Eggar

The situation in Panama remains calm. We have no reason to believe British citizens are at risk, but inquirers are being advised to contact Her Majesty's embassy on arrival for the latest information.

Mr. Tony Banks

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what contingency plans exist to protect British maritime interests in Panama in the event of the closure of the canal.

Mr. Eggar

We keep the situation under constant review and are in touch with British shipping interests.
