Mr. Fatchett

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many(a) young, (b) long-term and (c) remand prisoners there were in Her Majesty's prison Leeds on the latest available figures.

On 4 June 1985, 1,306 prisoners were held in HM prison Leeds. On 12 February 1988 the figure was 1,410.

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department when he expects construction work to start and to be completed on the extension of Her Majesty's prison Leeds.

Work on the redevelopment of HM prison Leeds is being undertaken in four phases, the first of which has now begun. It is expected that the final phase will be completed by August 1996.
