Mr. George Howarth

To ask the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster which countries have had a smaller increase than the United Kingdom in industrial output between 1979 and 1987.

Of the major industrial countries, France had a smaller increase in industrial output than the United Kingdom between 1979 and 1986. However, since 1981 industrial production in the United Kingdom has increased more rapidly than in France, Germany, Italy or the United States of America. (Comparable figures are not yet available for 1987.)
