HC Deb 03 March 1988 vol 128 c634W
Mr. Cohen

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he will list each local authority fire brigade in England and Wales; and if he will provide details of the net loss of uniformed operational fire fighting posts which have been implemented in each, with ministerial consent, under the Fire Services Act 1947, for each financial year since 1978–79.

Mr. John Patten

The information sought, but on a calendar year basis, can be derived from the annual reports of Her Majesty's Chief Inspector of Fire Services for England and Wales for the relevant years, copies of which are in the Library. The Secretary of State's approval is required before a fire authority may reduce the number of whole-time members of the brigade other than those whose duties do not normally include fire fighting, and of part-time members of the brigade.

Mr. Cohen

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he will list each local authority fire brigade in England and Wales; and if he will provide details of any net loss of fire appliances which have been implemented in each, with ministerial consent, under the Fire Services Act 1947, for each financial year since 1978–79.

Mr. John Patten

The local authority fire brigades in England and Wales are listed in the annual reports of Her Majesty's Chief Inspector of Fire Services for England and Wales, copies of which are in the Library. The other information sought is not readily available and could be provided only at disproportionate cost.
