HC Deb 03 March 1988 vol 128 c691W
Dr. Owen

To ask the Secretary of State for Social Services what is the average cost per head of breast cancer screening and cervical cancer screening.

Mrs. Currie

Expenditure on cervical cancer screening is not separately identified in health authority accounts. It has been estimated that the average cost of taking and examining a cervical smear is about £10. It is estimated that, based on the economic appraisal in the Forrest report, the average revenue cost per woman screened by mammography for breast cancer is about £14 including, where necessary, the cost of assessment and diagnosis.
