My Department is in regular contact with all the main organisations interested in farm animal welfare, and they have made representations on a wide variety of topics.

63. Miss Fookes

To ask the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food what representations he has received concerning the promotion of animal welfare.

Mr. Donald Thompson

I am not aware of any recent representations on this. However, the Farm Animal Welfare Council is just setting up a group to look into the subject, and I expect that it will report in due course.

73. Miss Widdecombe

To ask the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food if he will ensure that full information is made available about improvements in farm animal welfare.

106. Mr. Andrew Mitchell

To ask the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food what steps he takes to ensure that the public is fully informed about improvements in animal welfare.

Mr. Donald Thompson

The welfare codes, which embody the latest scientific advice and the best current husbandry practice, are sent to all known livestock keepers and my staff visit farms to make information available about improvements in welfare. My Department also makes regular announcements to the media about the steps it is taking to improve animal welfare.
