HC Deb 02 March 1988 vol 128 cc592-3W
52. Mr. James Lamond

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs if he has had any recent discussions with the Turkish Government regarding the withdrawal of its troops from Cyprus.

Mrs. Chalker

During his official visit to Britain last July my right hon. and learned Friend and I made clear to the then Turkish Foreign Minister, Mr. Halefoglu, our view that his Government should reduce the number of their troops in Cyprus. we continue to press this view on the Turkish Government at every opportunity.

53. Mr. Fallon

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs when he next intends to discuss Turkey's accession to the European Economic Community with his counterparts in the Community.

Mrs. Chalker

Turkey's application to join the European Community has been referred to the EC Commission, which is preparing its opinion. The European Community Council of Ministers will consider Turkey's application once that opinion is available and it has had the opportunity to study it.

82. Mr. Stokes

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what steps he is taking to support Turkey's application for membership of the European Economic Community.

Mrs. Chalker

Turkey's application to join the European Community has been referred to the European Commission, which is preparing its opinion. It would not be appropriate to express a view on the application until that opinion is available.
