HC Deb 02 March 1988 vol 128 c615W
Mr. John D. Taylor

To ask the Secretary of State for Defence how many Turkish Cypriots and Greek Cypriots are employed at each of the two sovereign bases in the islands of Cyprus; and what lengths of the Dhekelia base boundary are common with(a) Turkish northern Cyprus and (b) Greek southern Cyprus.

Mr. Sainsbury

Some 857 Greek Cypriots are currently employed at the eastern sovereign base area (Dhekelia) and some 1,934 at the western sovereign base area (Akrotiri). 322 Turkish Cypriots are employed at Dhekelia.

The Dhekelia base boundary borders the UN buffer zone for about 3 miles, the Republic of Cyprus south of the buffer zone for about 23 miles, and the so-called Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus for about 27 miles.
