HC Deb 02 March 1988 vol 128 c573W
Dr. Thomas

To ask the Secretary of State for Wales if he will make a statement on measures being undertaken by his Department to control the incidence of leptospirosis in cattle in Wales.

Mr. Peter Walker

The Agricultural Development and Advisory Service (ADAS) offers a leptospirosis control programme as part of its cattle health scheme, the aim of which is to provide a pool of cattle herds of recognised health status for domestic and export trade. Farmers may seek either elite herd status, where all cattle are serologically negative for leptospirosis, or controlled herd status, in which infected cattle can become clear of infection by a planned programme of antibiotic treatment and vaccination.

Any farmer suspecting or concerned about leptospirosis in cattle should consult his local veterinary surgeon.
