HC Deb 02 March 1988 vol 128 cc597-8W
Mrs. Mahon

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport what action he is taking to ensure that regions north of London are able to benefit fully from the opening of the Channel tunnel.

Mr. David Mitchell

The opening of the Channel tunnel will make it possible for British Rail to provide through passenger and freight services between regional destinations and the continent. Section 40 of the Channel Tunnel Act requires BR to publish a plan by the end of 1989 setting out its proposals for international rail services through the tunnel. It will be consulting widely with interested parties in the regions in the preparation of this plan.

Mr. Thurnham

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport what information he has on any proposals by British Rail for the provision of through services to the north and north-west using the Channel tunnel.

Mr. David Mitchell

None as yet. British Rail will be setting out its proposals for Channel tunnel through services to the regions in the plan it is required to publish by the end of 1989 under section 40 of the Channel Tunnel Act. BR will be consulting widely with interested parties in the regions over the preparation of this plan.
