To ask the Minister for the Arts what information he has on the number of Arts Council employees in(a) 1978 and (b) the current year.

Mr. Luce

The Arts Council had 382 employees in 1978. The current figure of 531 includes 175 staff of the South Bank board (excluding the art department), considerably fewer than the staff previously employed by the Greater London council to perform the same functions.
