To ask the Secretary of State for Social Services what sum of money he plans to make available in 1988–89 to educate young people about the consequences of alcohol abuse.

Mrs. Currie

The Health Education Authority plans to commit approximately £400,000 of its central funds to alcohol education in 1988–89. This includes a grant to the Teachers Advisory Council on alcohol and drug education and expenditure on a number of activities particularly designed for young people.

Alcohol Concern, the national voluntary agency which has been awarded grant-aid of £500,000 for 1988–89, plans to undertake a number of alcohol education activities including initiatives for young people in collaboration with national youth organisations.
