HC Deb 01 March 1988 vol 128 c532W
31. Mr. Bill Walker

To ask the Secretary of State for Employment if he has any plans to encourage the tourism and hotel industries to promote career opportunities for young people; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Lee

I am constantly encouraging the tourism and hospitality industries to promote the excellent and varied career opportunities that they can offer to young people. I am particularly gratified to see the wide range of careers material now being produced by the industry itself.

46. Mr. Waller

To ask the Secretary of State for Employment how many new jobs have been created in the tourism sector in the Yorkshire and Humberside region during the past five years.

Mr. Lee

Estimates of the number of new jobs created are not available. However, there has been a net increase of 32,000 employees in employment in the hotel and catering industry in the Yorkshire and Humberside region over the period June 1982 to June 1987. This figure does not include the self-employed, for whom a comparable estimate is not available.
